Food shouldn’t be an impossible choice. That’s the simple — but critical — message for Hunger Action Month. Feeding America and other hunger relief organizations are once again using September to promote our nation’s growing issues with food insecurity.
Feeding America —the largest hunger-relief organization in the United States — estimates that as many as 42 million Americans (including 13 million children) may be struggling with hunger as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, many for the first time in their lives. And the “impossible choice” that many have to make isn’t the decision whether or not to have French fries with their dinner. It’s the very real choice countless people must make between food and other essential needs, like medicine, housing/electricity, and childcare. (Even before the pandemic, an alarming 10.5 percent of the population was facing some level of food insecurity, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.)
What You Can Do
During Hunger Action Month, there are many ways you can get involved and help make a difference.
- Donate: Obviously making a donation — of money or food — to a hunger-relief group in your community or to a national organization is the most immediate course of action. Funds and food can help expand the resources available to those in need.
- Volunteer: There are several ways you can give your time, including lending a hand at a food bank, soup kitchen, or mobile distribution event; organizing or participating in a food drive; or checking in with your local hunger-relief organization to find out how your skills may be best able to help make a tangible impact. For example, if you work in public relations, perhaps you can help your local relief agency spread the word about their needs and activities.
- Speak Up: You can raise awareness by talking about the severity of the crisis with your family and friends and on social media (using the hashtag #HungerActionMonth to help amplify your words). The more people who understand how dire the situation is, the more likely change will come.
- Save the Date: Friday, September 17 is Hunger Action Day, when people across the country are encouraged to raise awareness to this crisis. This could be the perfect day to get started on your mission to end hunger.
